New York, Sep 8 (AP) Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, surrendered in court on Thursday to face fresh allegations that he was accused of building a wall along the US-Mexico border. He cheated the donors who gave money for it.
The state-level charges against Bannon in New York resemble a federal prosecution effort that ended abruptly ahead of a trial, when Trump pardoned Bannon on the last day of his term.
Presidential pardons only apply to federal offenses, not state offenses. Either argument is likely to fail in Bannon’s case, as the federal case did not involve his release or conviction. Bannon, 68, arrived at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office shortly after 9 a.m. on Thursday. He had admitted in a statement on Tuesday that he would be charged soon.
Bannon previously said that District Attorney Alvin Bragg has “now decided to pursue false charges against me 60 days before the midterm election”. Bannon alleged that Democratic prosecutors targeted him because Bannon and his radio show are popular with Trump’s Republican supporters.
Federal agents nabbed Bannon from a luxury yacht off the Connecticut coast after he was arrested on charges that he pocketed more than US$1 million in donations to the Wall.
