Significant 5.1 quake hits near Kenai, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA
5.1 quake 12 Mar 10:59 am (GMT -9)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in the United States near Kenai, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, March 12th, 2022, at 10:59 am local time at an intermediate depth of 55 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nikiski (pop. 4,500) located 26 miles from the epicenter, Kenai (pop. 7,700) 31 miles away, Kalifornsky (pop. 7,900) 36 miles away, Ridgeway (pop. 2,000) 36 miles away, Cohoe (pop. 1,400) 38 miles away, Soldotna (pop. 4,500) 39 miles away, and Sterling (pop. 5,600) 46 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alaska City (pop. 298,700) located 78 miles from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
