McCracken, Coppersmith Advance

GARFIELD HEIGHTS –î South Range’s wrestling program made a big impact earlier in the season by winning the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association Div. III state duals title and now the Raiders are set to continue that success at the state individual tournament.

The Raiders qualified eight to state including 132-pound champion Raymond Cmil to win the Garfield Heights Div. III district on Saturday.

The Raiders scored 179.5 points to take the title over second-place Waynedale (141.5).

Finishing second for the Raiders were Michael Markulin (138) and Jacob Richardson (144). Third-place finishers for the Raiders were Hunter Newell (106), Jacob Starkey (157) and Logan Cormell (165). Clayton Kramer (126) and Christopher Colucci (215) were fourth.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the state tournament set for Friday through Sunday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Two Columbiana County wrestlers also advanced to state as Crestview’s A.J. Coppersmith (150) and United’s Dallas McCracken (285) were second and third respectively in their own weight classes.

Cmil (38-1) beat Wellington’s Jeremiah McKee 10-8 in the 132 final.

Markulin (45-4) was beaten by a 5-3 sudden victory by Mapleton’s Andrew Sas in the 138 final. Richardson (37-8) lost in a 4-2 sudden victory to Smithville’s Michael Harris in the 144 final.

Coppersmith (38-2) was pinned in 41 seconds by Tuslaw’s Jacob Lyons in the 150 final.

Newell (43-6) got third at 106 by pinning Southeast’s Owen Martin in 41 seconds. Starkey (43-8) earned his third-place showing with an 8-4 win over Rootstown’s Cody Coontz at 157. Cormell (48-6) had a pin in 1:42 over Rootstown’s Sylas Reiheld at 165 to earn third.

McCracken, the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference’s lone state qualifier, won his heavyweight consolation final by a 9-2 count over Mogadore’s Tyler Schellengarger. McCracken is 43-6.

Kramer (35-12) dropped a 5-2 decision to Crestwood’s J.P. Wrobel in the 126 consolation final. Colucci (42-6) was pinned in 4:27 by Dalton’s Austin Ryder in the 215 consolation final.

Fifth place finishers included Crestview’s Braedon Stallworth (132) and Southern’s Wyatt Morris (175). Sixth place finishers were South Range’s Gavin Pahanish (120), United’s Jensen Baker (138) and Southern’s Gabe Blissenbach (157).
