Joye Lynn Shoemaker passed away surrounded by her children at her home in Salem, Oregon on January 31, 2022, at age 89. Joye Lynn Mackey was born on May 7, 1932, in Meridian, Texas to Willie (Bill) and Ora Mackey and grew up in Odessa, TX. Joye met William (Bill) Files Shoemaker Sr. while they were both in college, and they married on December 25, 1953, in Odessa, Texas. Joye and Bill had a daughter, Lynne, while living in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1957 Joye and Bill moved to an Eskimo village in Cantwell, Alaska to teach in a two-room schoolhouse, and to pursue big game hunting and fishing. They then moved to Fairbanks, AK to teach, and had two children, Julie and Files. In 1968, Joye and Bill moved to Corvallis, OR where Joye taught elementary school while Bill obtained his Ph.D., and they had daughter Anne. In 1972, Bill and Joye moved to Waldport, Oregon, where Joye taught for many years at Waldport Elementary School and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. In her retirement years, Joye enjoyed traveling with family and friends, including to South Africa and Australia. She and her retired teacher friends were always on the go. Joye was also an accomplished seamstress, and in her retirement years she crafted many beautiful quilts. In 2015 Joye moved to Salem, OR to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Joye is survived by her children Lynne Shoemaker, Julie Bulen, Anne Hurt, and W. Files Shoemaker, her grandchildren Megan, Carlie, Ian, Wyatt, Claire, Hayden and Ethan, and one great-grandson, Zander. Joye was laid to rest next to her husband Bill at Eureka Cemetery and Mausoleum in Newport, OR.
